Perfectly sweet and simple Orange Chicken
Chinese food is often extremely sweet and leaves me feeling bloated and over-fed. I began re-creating popular dishes at home and feel wonderful during and after every meal! Here is a quick and simple sauce recipe that is adjustable to your own sweetness level.
Tip: I also recommend substituting brown rice for white rice, as much as possible. Brown rice has fiber, protein, and nutrients that will benefit your body. Whereas white rice is just empty calories.
Grab a small saucepan and let’s get started!
Sweet and Spicy Orange Sauce
Yield: 4 servings Time: approximately 30 minutes
Tip: you can also make-ahead and keep in the freezer!
- 1 cup fresh orange juice
- 1 cup white wine vinegar
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon lower-sodium soy sauce
- 1/2 tsp sesame oil
- As much red pepper flakes as you like
Put all ingredients in your non-stick sauce pan, whisk, and bring it up to a boil. Once it has boiled, bring it down to a simmer and let it thicken. You can add in a slurry of cornstarch and water to help it thicken, but I have found this to be unnecessary. The sauce should thicken through evaporation. Taste and adjust to your liking before serving!
